The 7-point DBQ rubric

Every AP history DBQ is graded on the same 7-point rubric: 1 point for a defensible thesis, 1 for contextualization, up to 2 for using documents, 1 for outside evidence, 1 for sourcing documents (HIPP — historical situation, intended audience, purpose, point of view), and 1 for demonstrating complex understanding. Knowing the rubric cold is half the battle, because each point is a checklist item you either hit or don't.

Writing a DBQ under time pressure

A reliable plan: spend the reading period grouping documents and drafting a thesis, write a strong contextualization sentence, build two-to-three body paragraphs that each use documents plus outside evidence, and reserve the complexity point for a paragraph that addresses change over time or multiple perspectives. Practicing timed DBQs with grading builds this rhythm.
