AP Calculus AB vs BC: which one should you take?
BC is not just "AB plus extra." Here’s the honest breakdown of what each course actually covers, who they’re for, and how colleges treat the credit.
Content difference, in one sentence each
AP Calculus AB covers limits, derivatives, integrals, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. It’s essentially the first semester of college calculus (Calc I).
AP Calculus BC covers everything in AB plus parametric equations, polar coordinates, vector-valued functions, sequences, infinite series, Taylor and Maclaurin series, and integration by parts. It’s the first two semesters of college calculus (Calc I + Calc II) compressed into one high-school year.
If you take BC, you also get an "AB subscore" — a separate score reflecting how you did on the AB-overlapping material. So a student who takes BC and bombs the series questions can still walk away with a 4 or 5 AB subscore. There’s no equivalent BC subscore from taking AB.
Pace and workload reality
BC moves roughly 1.5-1.7x faster than AB. If your school offers AB as a year-long course and BC as a year-long course, BC is the same calendar time but covers significantly more material — which means topics get less classroom time and more is expected of you outside of class.
The students who thrive in BC: they’re comfortable with abstraction, fast at algebraic manipulation, and don’t panic when an instructor moves past a topic before everyone has nailed it. They’re willing to spend 4-6 hours per week on practice problems beyond what the teacher assigns.
The students who struggle in BC: they did well in pre-calc by memorizing procedures rather than understanding why. BC punishes that — you can’t fake your way through series convergence tests by pattern-matching. The "why" matters and is tested directly.
Score distributions tell the truth
Each year, BC posts a noticeably higher 5-rate than AB — typically 40-50% of BC takers earn a 5, versus 18-22% of AB takers. That’s not because BC is easier. It’s because the BC cohort is self-selected: stronger math students who already mastered AB-level material took BC, and weaker math students stayed in AB.
What this means for you: do not infer "BC is easier so I’ll take it for the easy 5." The distribution shifts because the population shifts. If you took BC straight out of pre-calc without the AB-level intuition, you’d be at the left tail of the BC distribution, not riding the comfortable middle.
The realistic prediction: a student who can earn a 4 on AB can probably earn a 3-4 on BC if they put in extra work; a student who can earn a 3 on AB will likely earn a 2-3 on BC. Self-assess honestly before deciding.
College credit treatment
Most colleges treat BC as worth more credit because it covers more content. A 5 on BC typically gets you out of two semesters of calculus (Calc I + Calc II). A 5 on AB gets you out of one (Calc I only).
There are exceptions. Some highly selective universities won’t accept either for credit at all, only for placement. Some only accept AB credit for non-STEM majors. Some accept the AB subscore from a BC exam as a stand-in for the AB exam. The variance is enormous; check your target schools directly.
For a STEM-major student, the math is straightforward: BC is worth twice as much credit at most schools, so the credit-per-effort ratio is roughly equal between BC and AB. If you’re going into something where you’ll never see Calc II — humanities, social sciences — AB is fine and BC is overkill.
If your school only offers one
Take what’s offered. The "AB to BC progression" — taking AB junior year and BC senior year — is the safest path and the path most schools that offer both expect. It gives you a year of solid Calc I foundations before tackling the harder Calc II content, and the 5-rate on BC for students with that prep is dramatically higher than for students who jumped straight in.
If your school only offers AB, take AB and self-study the BC topics over the summer if you want to sit the BC exam in May of your senior year. The platform supports both — pick AB Calc for school-aligned units, and add BC Calc for the additional topics.
Don’t skip calculus entirely because "my major doesn’t need it." Even non-STEM students discover that one semester of college calc helps with statistics, economics, and quantitative reasoning across disciplines.
