FRQ strategy that actually works, broken down by subject

Every AP has a different FRQ structure. Here’s the section-by-section game plan for math, science, history, and English exams.

What every FRQ section has in common

Whatever the subject, every AP FRQ rewards the same three behaviors. First: address the prompt directly. If the question says "calculate," the rubric will not reward an explanation without the calculation. If it says "justify," it will not reward a number without the justification. Read each verb in the prompt and ensure your response has a corresponding move.

Second: show work in a graded format. AP readers spend roughly 90 seconds per response. Bury the answer in a wall of prose and they’ll miss it. Label your sub-parts, set off your final answer on its own line, and box your numerical results.

Third: do not skip parts. FRQ sub-parts are usually independent — getting part (a) wrong doesn’t prevent you from earning part (b)’s points if you use a reasonable carried-forward value. Students who skip parts entirely lose points that were free for the taking.

AP Calc AB / BC: 6 FRQs, 90 minutes total

The Calc FRQs are explicitly graded on a points-per-step basis. Each sub-part — typically 3-5 per question — has a specific 1-2 point allocation. Your job is to make every step graders are looking for explicit.

The pattern: state your setup ("Using the chain rule, dy/dx = …"), show the substitution, simplify cleanly, present the final answer with units. The "units" piece is graded separately. Velocity in meters per second. Population in animals. Area in square units. Forget the units and you forfeit a sub-point regardless of correctness elsewhere.

The calculator-allowed section invites a specific failure mode: students compute a value on the calculator and write only the result. That earns the answer-correct point but loses the work-shown points. Even on calculator-allowed FRQs, write the setup before the calculator step. "f(3) - f(0) = (calculator) 2.487" is graded as both setup and answer; "2.487" alone is just an answer.

Time budget: 12-15 minutes per FRQ. If you’re stuck after 4 minutes, move on and come back. A blank sub-part is 0 points. A partial sub-part is partial credit.

AP Physics 1, 2, C: long and short response

Physics FRQs reward physical reasoning over algebra. A typical 7-point Physics FRQ awards 1 point for identifying the relevant physical principle, 2 points for setting up the equation correctly, 2 points for the symbolic manipulation, 1 point for the numerical answer with units, and 1 point for a qualitative justification or interpretation.

Notice that the algebra is only 2 of 7 points. If you stare at a question for 5 minutes trying to find the trick, you’re leaving the easier points behind. Always write the relevant principle in words first. "Conservation of energy applies because there is no friction" — that’s a point right there.

The qualitative-justification piece is where most students lose. "Explain why" or "compare" prompts require a sentence or two of physics reasoning, not a number. Practice answering "explain" prompts in a single complete sentence that names the physical principle and applies it: "The block decelerates because friction acts opposite to motion, and friction’s magnitude is independent of velocity at this scale."

AP US / World / Euro History: DBQ + LEQ + SAQs

The history exams have three FRQ-style components: short-answer questions (SAQs), a long essay question (LEQ), and a document-based question (DBQ). Different rubrics, different strategies.

SAQs are short — typically four sentences for each of three sub-parts. They do not require a thesis. They reward direct, evidence-cited answers. "Identify one cause of the Civil War" should be answered in a single declarative sentence with a specific historical fact. Two sentences is overkill. Five sentences is wasted time you needed for the DBQ.

The LEQ is a free-form essay where you choose evidence yourself (no documents provided). Thesis, three body paragraphs, complexity move. Same skeleton as the DBQ but without document citation requirements. The hardest part is recall — you need to bring 2-3 specific historical facts per paragraph that you remembered on your own.

Time budget: 50 minutes for the three SAQs and LEQ combined, 60 minutes for the DBQ. Most students spend too long on the LEQ; cap it at 35-40 minutes and bank the rest for the DBQ.

AP Chemistry / Biology: structured multi-part FRQs

Chem and Bio FRQs are heavily structured — typically 6 sub-parts per question, each worth 1-2 points. Each sub-part is independent. Each is graded on a specific scientific concept.

The Chem rubric loves explicit reasoning. "Justify your answer in terms of intermolecular forces" requires you to name the specific force (London dispersion, dipole-dipole, hydrogen bonding) and explain why it applies to this molecule. "Stronger IMFs" without specifying which is worth 0 points.

The Bio rubric loves the same explicit chain. "Explain why the population grew" earns the point only if you name the mechanism — increased food supply, reduced predation, reduced disease, etc. — and describe the causal chain, not the outcome.

Practice writing these answers in a specific format: claim → mechanism → evidence. "The population grew (claim) because the introduction of antibiotics reduced bacterial mortality (mechanism), which is consistent with the doubling time observed between weeks 3 and 6 (evidence)." That structure scores reliably across both Chem and Bio.

AP English Lang / Lit: rhetorical analysis + literary analysis + argument

English exams have three essays each — synthesis, rhetorical analysis, and argument for Lang; poetry analysis, prose analysis, and free-response for Lit. All are graded on the same 6-point rubric: 1 point for thesis, 4 points for evidence + commentary (the hard 4), 1 point for sophistication.

The thesis must take a defensible position. "The author uses imagery" is not a thesis — every author uses imagery. "The author’s imagery shifts from natural to mechanical to depict the protagonist’s alienation" is a thesis — it makes a specific claim about a specific change.

The 4 evidence + commentary points are earned by quoting the text and then explaining what the quote shows. Not paraphrasing. Not summarizing. The pattern: quote (in quotation marks) → explanation that ties the quote back to your thesis → repeat 4-6 times across the essay.

The sophistication point is the rarest. Earned by qualifying your argument ("while X is true in stanza 1, Y emerges in stanza 3"), making a connection beyond the text ("this anxiety reflects mid-century American suburbia’s underlying tension"), or using particularly precise diction. Don’t force it — graders penalize attempts that read as forced sophistication.
