Ads and cookies

Last updated

AP Scholr is free for every student. The trade-off is that we show ads to cover AI and hosting costs. This page explains exactly what that means and lets you choose.

The short version

Ads are why it is free
Every generated note and graded essay costs real money. Ads cover it so students do not have to.
Your study data is never used
Essays, tutor messages, scores and progress are never shared with any advertiser.
Declining does not remove ads
It changes how they are chosen: page content instead of browsing history. Same number of ads.
Change your mind any time
The two buttons below are the whole control, and your choice stays on your device.

1Why we show ads#

Every AI-generated note, practice problem and graded essay costs real money in compute fees. Across 4,000+ students that adds up quickly. We chose ads over a paywall so that AP prep stays free for the students who need it most, rather than only for the ones who can pay.

2What personalised ads means#

With your consent, Google may use browser cookies, including the DoubleClick DART cookie, to pick ads more relevant to you.

None of the following ever leaves AP Scholr: your essays, tutor messages, scores or study content. What Google sees is what any website sees: IP address, user agent and page URL.

3What changes if you decline#

  • You still see ads. We still need to fund the service.
  • Ads are chosen by page content rather than browsing history.
  • Google still uses cookies for frequency capping and fraud detection. These are not personalised advertising in the regulatory sense.
  • Ad density is identical. Only ad selection differs.

4Changing your mind#

  • Use the buttons on this page at any time.
  • Clear this site’s cookies to bring the consent banner back.
  • Use Google’s My Ad Center for a global toggle across every site.
  • Visit aboutads.info to opt out across many ad networks at once.

5The other cookies on AP Scholr#

A handful of essential cookies and localStorage entries make the app work: your Supabase authentication session, your selected courses, your theme preference, your ad-consent choice, and the keys of practice problems you have already seen so they are not repeated. None of these are used for advertising. The full list is in the Privacy Policy.

6Analytics#

We use Google Analytics and Vercel Analytics to understand aggregate usage. The data is aggregated, is not sold, and informs what we build next.
